Subtraction

Subject: Mathematics

Duration: 20 Minutes

Description:

Students use manipulatives to begin to understand basic principles of subtraction

PJ DayGoals:

Students will begin to understand the correlation between numbers and objects.

Students will be able to predict the pattern one subtracting by one and predicting solutions to subsequent equations

Objectives:

Introduce the concept of subtracting by ones.

Students will be introduced to the concept of zero

Teacher Materials:

Click, Clack, Splish, Splash by Doreen Cronin & Betsy Lewin

White board

Student Materials:

Plastic sandwich bags

Goldfish (10 per bag)

Procedure:

Have everyone go to the rug and sit in a circle around perimeter.

Hands out, Hands up, Hands in

  • Begin reading Click, Clack, Splish, Splash
  • Pass out goldfish bags to each student

Hands together and deep breaths

Explain what we are doing.  “We are going to use the goldfish to do some math.  I’ll write on the board and you will use and eat yours.  The rules are: you have to raise a silent hand if you have a question or an answer and you may not eat anything unless the rest of the class is eating.”  Have entire class count out their bags onto the floor in front of them.  Verify all students have the same amount (10).  Write “10” on white board.  Write “-“ and “=” on board and ask if anyone knows what they are.  Fill out the first equation “10-1=” ask students to take one fish out of their group and put it in their “lake” (mouth).  Ask how many are left?  Continue through the remaining goldfish (9-1=, 8-1=, etc.) Constantly verify the amounts are the same and begin to ask children to make predictions.  Use different goldfish to reinforce 1-to-1 correlations.

Assessment:  Today we learned about subtracting by ones and ended with how many?  Independently, students will answer and complete the following:

  1. How many fish remained after each equation
  2. Follow up worksheet on subtraction
